Staff suggestions

Below are some tips that care home staff have used to provide better oral health care.

Elderly man wearing a towel around his shoulders brushing teeth while a healthcare worker in blue scrubs holds another glass of water and looks on with a gentle smile.

Speak to residents
as adults

Avoid high pitch, short sentences, sing-song voices and patronising tone.

Smile

Smile as you interact, especially with residents with dementia. Research shows neutral expressions can be interpreted as fearful.

Ask about
personal routine

People have routines used for years before moving to a care home.

Toothbrushes

Try different types of toothbrushes to find one a resident prefers.

A Calm Space

Try to maintain a quiet, private and peaceful environment when brushing.

Mirrors

Try placing a mirror in front of the resident and standing behind them.

Opening the mouth

Soften brush with warm water. Gently touch the lips with the back of the brush and slowly twist to push back the lips and brush the outer surface of the teeth.

Toothpaste

Strong mint toothpaste can be off putting. Try a fruit flavoured fluoride toothpaste, a milder mint flavour, or an unflavoured alternative.

Be responsive

Provide feedback and encouragement.
You might have to try again later. Residents might be tired or in pain.

We’re always told to encourage residents to eat, especially if they’re losing weight, but no one talks about how sugary snacks might affect their teeth.
