What you can do now in care homes
- Apply what you have learnt from this resource. Embed preventative oral health care practices in care homes, focusing both on oral cleanliness and reducing sugar in resident’s diets.
- Follow our simple stages, one step at a time.
- Keep learning about the longer-term benefits of using dental therapists and dental nurses to support care homes.
- Explore whether other preventative products could offer value for the residents of care homes (e.g. the use of different professionally applied agents).
Get involved in research
There is so much more we need to learn about how to better support the oral health of care home residents. To get involved and partner with our research team please get in touch.
What we need to understand better
- How to embed preventative oral health care practices in care homes, focusing both on oral cleanliness and reducing sugar in resident’s diets.
- The longer-term benefits of using dental therapists and dental nurses to support care homes.
- Whether other preventative products could offer value for the residents of care homes (e.g. the use of different professionally applied agents).
Ideas for future studies
- Develop interventions for dependent older people living in the community. This will help them arrive at care homes with better oral health.
- Explore new ways of measuring and evaluating what works best to improve residents’ oral health and well-being.
